What exactly do I get?
Three things, in order.
1. A preview image (free): your current home page next to the new one, on desktop and phone.
2. A mock-up of your complete site, on a private link, within 48 hours (free, no commitment): every page (home, rooms or gîtes or menu, restaurant, directions, contact…) with your own text and photos, in French and English, to browse on your phone. Features (contact form, booking, map…) are finalised in step 3.
3. Your finished site, live at your own address (e.g. www.mygite.com), within 72 hours of your yes: features finalised and tested, your domain pointed to the new site, hosting and updates included, for €49 a month with no commitment (or buy it from €690). No payment before you approve.
Isn't €49 a month expensive?
It's the price of a fully looked-after website: redesign, hosting, security, updates and small changes, with no big build invoice up front. And every booking that comes through your own site instead of a platform is one commission less.
Am I tied in?
No. The plan has no commitment: it renews monthly and you can stop whenever you like, by email, with one month's notice. No exit fees.
What if I don't like the preview?
The preview and the mock-up are free and you owe nothing. If you half like them, tell Oscar what to change and he adjusts it. You only pay once you've approved the new site.
What if my photos are old or too small?
Oscar starts from your existing photos and crops and optimises them. If some are too small he'll tell you and advise on which to retake. He never passes off stock photos as your property.
Do I have to leave Booking.com or Airbnb?
No, keep them if they bring you guests. Your site becomes your own shop window: it links to your booking engine or channel manager, or simply to a form and a call button. Many travellers who find you on a platform then look up your website, so it should make them want to book direct.
Can my site be in English?
Yes, and it's included in the plan at no extra cost. Oscar can build your site in French, in English, or in both languages with a switch between them. It's very useful if you welcome international guests: they understand your rooms, prices and how to book, without going through a platform.
Do I keep my web address (domain name)?
Yes. You keep your current address, for example www.mygite.com, and it stays in your name. To point it at the new site, two small settings (“DNS records”) need changing at the company where you bought it (OVH, Gandi, Ionos, Orange…). Oscar sends you or your provider these two lines with step-by-step instructions, or, with your permission, does it for you in 10 minutes.
Your email addresses keep working: Oscar only touches the website settings, never your email settings. Your old site stays online until the switch, so there's no downtime. The change takes effect within a few hours.
I don't have a domain name yet.
No problem: Oscar registers one for you (for example www.oak-cottage.com), in your name so that it belongs to you.
Where is the site hosted?
On a global content delivery network (CDN) with an HTTPS certificate. Hosting, technical updates and monitoring are included in the plan.
Who owns the website?
Your text, photos, logo and domain are always yours. On the monthly plan, Oscar provides the design and hosting; if you want to own the site files themselves, you can buy your site (see below).
Can I buy my site instead of subscribing?
Yes. For a one-off payment (from €690) you receive all your site files and can host them anywhere you like. It is also how you keep your design if you leave the monthly plan.
How do I cancel, and what happens next?
There is no commitment: cancel any time by email, with one month's notice. Your domain always stays yours. Oscar gives you a free copy of your text and photos. To keep the design and site files too, you can buy your site (one-off payment) and host it anywhere.
What happens if a payment fails?
Don't worry. You first get an automatic reminder, then 14 days to sort it out. After that the site is paused and replaced by a simple “Site temporarily unavailable” page showing your contact details, so guests can still reach you. If it's still unpaid 30 days later, hosting is closed and the files are deleted; before that, Oscar offers you a final export of your content.
